Maximizing Vitamin D: Timing Matters

Apr 04, 2024

🌞 As spring tiptoes in, we're all itching to get out in those glorious rays. But did you know that even though you may feel the sun on your skin, you might not be getting the type of sunshine you need to make vitamin D? 😱

Yep, you read that right – turns out, there's more to the sunshine-vitamin D dance than meets the eye. While it's true that sunlight kickstarts your body's vitamin D production, not all sunshine is created equal. 🕶️

Here's the scoop: your skin needs a special kind of sunlight – the UVB rays – to set the whole vitamin D synthesis thing in motion. But these rays aren't always in full force.

UVB rays are most abundant during midday hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. However, depending on your geographical location and the time of year, the angle of the sun may be too low for UVB rays to penetrate the atmosphere effectively, reducing our ability to trigger vitamin D synthesis.

This means that your window of opportunity may be pretty limited, even though the sun is out. So, getting outside in Spring’s early morning, and walking the dog after work may not be as vitamin-D-rich as you thought! (Although, there are other benefits to those behaviors!)

The closer you are the equator, the less of an issue this becomes.

As a result, we may still find ourselves deficient in vitamin D, despite our best efforts.

So, what are we to do? While catching some rays is by far the superior way to get Vitamin D, we have to get responsible, brief exposure at the right time of day. Think exposing a little skin on midday strolls, while eating lunch outside, or with a 10-min cat nap on the grass or your favorite lawn chair before heading back indoors.

As we embark on our sun-soaked adventures this spring, we can make sure we're getting our vitamin D fix by being armed with a sprinkle of knowledge and a dash of sun-smarts – and enjoy every minute of it!
